Premesis of virtual learning

On Friday Daniel and me met in the university PC-Pool to cut our PLE-Video with Windows Movie Maker. It didn´t work at all, because we had to restart the computer as soon as we tried to copy and paste a video sequence. We were pretty nerved and after a few hours we gave up. Instead we created our PLE-chart (example of a PLE) which we wanted to integrate in our Video. The base of it is an animated Powerpoint slide. Then we made screencaptures of this slide. Afterwards we splitted the video sequences into half and each of us cut them at home.

Yesterday we spent a long day at university until we finished our two videos.

We put our cut video sequences together into one movie, integrated the “PLE-chart” screencapture and edited the passages between the video sequences with some effects. Finally we chose the sound track.

Then we started to create our VLE-Video. Therefore we wrote notes on stickers (post-its) and took pictures of each image. We also edited the passages between the pictures with some effects and chose another sound track for this video. The second video didn´t take as much effort as the first one.

Then we finished our Powerpoint Presentation and put Links to the videos.

On Tuesday Daniel and me met early in the morning. We made screencaptures (Program Hypercam) in the PC-Pool in the 5th floor, which we want to integrate in our video.

We weren´t sure wether to use Windows Movie Maker or iMovie to cut our video. The advantage of Movie Maker is that both Daniel and me have this program on our computers at home. The advantage of iMovie is that someone from the “Medienzentrum” can give us advice in case problems occur.

Well, we decided to use iMovie (the Macs in Room 514 are more attractive ). First we got our video transfered in iMovie. After several trials to use the sreencaptures in the program iMovie we gave up and changed to Windows Movie Maker. Then we brought our video scenes and the screencaptures in order.

I know Mac and Windows compatibility problems are quite common, but unfortunately they took a lot of our time on Tuesday.

On Friday (May 16th) we exchanged our thoughts about the video sequences via e-mail.

Yesterday we decided which situations we want to film and which material we need.

Today Daniel and me met to film about ten different situations. Of course our film sequences are not very professional, but we enjoyed the shooting of our video

After I posted this blog I´ll transfer the film material on a usb-stick and tomorrow we´ll continue with our group work.

Daniel and me met the first time via skype and it worked very well.

Our main topic was the video. In the beginning of our conversation we talked about our own PLE´s and in which ways they could be expanded.

Actually we wanted to show a diagram what a PLE contains. We agreed to develop a little video about a PLE structure. But how???

I thought it might be a good solution to film a person in different situations (e.g. a person communicates with his friend who lives in another city via skype). Afterwards a sequence appears in which the PLE diagram will be extended with a skype logo and so on… Daniel suggested to use a screenshot for the second part. We developed a few rough ideas about different PLE situations. Till Friday (May 16th) we will rethink and specify them.

Sorry, it has been a while since I wrote my last post.

In our seminar session on May 6th we dicussed our experiences with the groupwork so far. Ralf mentioned that he wants us to present the topics VLE and PLE as a learning unit based on multimedia. It is also possible to integrate a little multimedia product (e.g. a video) in our presentation.

After the seminar Daniel and me met to talk about our work process. First we exchanged our research results. Then we collected ideas how to present our topics VLE and PLE with a multimedia product, because we didn´t plan that yet. It´s not much time left till our presentation day and therefore we decided instead of producing a complexe learning unit about our topics to make a little video what a PLE includes. The remaining part we will present with a common PPP.

We both agreed to set up skype within the next 2 days.  Daniel plans to attend a finul cut short introduction on Thursday (May 8th). I had already such a short introduction, but never used it unfortunately.

Till Tuesday Daniel and me made some research about VLE and PLE.

In our meeting we discussed what a Virtual Learning Environment and a Personal Learning Environment is and which forms of learning they include. Also we created a first structure for our presentation on the 27th of May.

We´ll post our information about VLE (Daniel) and PLE (Martina) in the seminar wiki.
